Every Choice Shapes Tomorrow
There are some ideas that quietly sit in the background of your life for years before you realise they have a name.
For me, one of those ideas was the belief that people can change, and that the world can change because people do.
I didn't always have the words for it.
I simply found myself coming back to the same thought over and over again.
Every choice matters.
Not because every choice is life-changing.
But because small choices rarely stay small.
They shape habits.
Habits shape character.
Character influences how we treat ourselves, the people around us and the world we live in.
When I look back at my own life, I don't see one dramatic moment that changed everything.
I see hundreds of small moments.
Choosing to leave a situation that no longer served me.
Choosing to learn.
Choosing to question beliefs I'd inherited rather than simply accepting them.
Choosing to be curious instead of judgemental.
Choosing compassion over assumptions.
None of those decisions transformed my life overnight.
But together, they slowly changed the direction I was walking.
That's something coaching reinforced for me.
We often imagine change as one huge leap.
In reality, it's usually a collection of ordinary decisions made consistently over time.
One conversation.
One boundary.
One act of courage.
One moment of kindness.
One decision to try again after yesterday didn't go as planned.
Those moments don't always feel significant when we're living them.
Only later do we realise they were quietly shaping who we were becoming.
A little while ago, I came across a word I'd never heard before.
Meliorism.
It's the belief that the world can become better through human effort.
I remember reading the definition and smiling because it described something I'd believed for years without ever giving it a name.
Not all of my philosophy.
Just part of it.
I don't think life is simple enough to fit neatly into one label.
We're all shaped by different experiences, different beliefs and different ways of understanding the world.
But meliorism resonated with me because it reflects something I come back to again and again.
The future isn't something that simply happens to us.
It's something we're constantly helping to create.
Every time we choose patience over anger.
Every time we choose understanding over judgement.
Every time we support someone instead of criticising them.
Every time we decide to keep going when giving up would be easier.
Those choices ripple outwards.
We may never see where they end.
In many ways, that's also how I think about symbols.
I don't believe a symbol changes your life.
I believe you do.
A symbol simply becomes a quiet reminder of the direction you've already chosen.
It doesn't walk the path for you.
It reminds you why you started walking in the first place.
That's why the phrase 'Every Choice Shapes Tomorrow' has become so important to me.
It reminds me that change doesn't arrive all at once.
It grows through the decisions we make every day, often long before we notice the results.
Whether those choices are about kindness, courage, boundaries, creativity or simply taking the next small step, they all contribute to the person we're becoming.
To me, that's something worth remembering.
And sometimes, a symbol is the perfect reminder.
